The 2016 McLaren 650s

The function of an instrument is tough, it has to be as close to technically perfect as an object and enjoyable to play by a user at the same time. McLarens are a great embodiment of this conundrum, and the 650s is a true testament that you can truly have it all. With a style that is otherworldly and performance to match, the McLaren 650s is a true car of extremes. The competition does the same things, but not at all in the same way that this genuine British badass does. This is a chapter in the amazing and many-numbered saga of McLaren super-sports cars that has a little bit of everything, so keep your hands inside the bus and stow your tea cups before departure as we explore this magnificent machine.

Overview:

The McLaren brand has been making race cars for a long time, and relatively recently they decided to put that same attention to a road-going land-speed missile called the MP4-12C in 2011. This has led to a chain reaction in which they have created over 20 models of road-going weapons for their customers to enjoy. The 650s is the perfect middle ground on performance, price, and newness that the range has to offer, presented in a very McLaren shape and sound.

The car is finished in a subtle but stunning silver over black, with Imperato Green brake calipers. The wheels are finished in a contrasting gloss black. The curves light up with the metal flake of the silver color, and the Imperato Green accents are highlighted by the black wheels and carbon-ceramic brake discs.

The Archetype and Experience:

This car is a Weapon all the way through. The engineers and the styling team both made their points clear on this car, and the overall message is that this thing is a hard-charging smile-making machine. This car's overall fit, finish, and demeanor are reminiscent of a perfectly honed Japanese chef's knife that has "hold on" labels on its handle due to its expert cutting ability. The car is truly a fine-tuned expression of automotive perfection.

Even the smaller details of the car express its mission: full-force engagement and zero loss of driver enjoyment.

The Exterior:

Curves and lines rarely come together this well on a car. The 650s has this completeness about it that very few cars of its time can match, and it makes it stand out.

The car has a lot of great transitions in the bodywork, with creases meeting to create compound shapes and arches that are distinctly McLaren.

The Interior:

McLaren interiors are very polarizing, with some loving the fitment of the parts and material selection, while some prefer the more geometric styles presented by Mclaren's competitors. To me, the interior in the 650s is the perfect bridge between P1-esque alien cockpit styling and conventional shapes in an interior. The buttons are where you could expect them to be, with other add-ons as well.

The Options:

This car came standard with quite a few carbon pieces and features, and has just enough visual add-ons from McLaren to satisfy the eye.

The Power:

This car is unholy upon acceleration from any gear, with a suction-like pull that rockets you forward at spill-your-tea speeds. The turbo noise is very well-set into the engine's classy, ready tone and the pitch at full tilt is unlike anything else.

Here is some glorious 3.8L Twin turbo noises for your hearing pleasure!!

Should you buy one?

This is a very subjective car, because of its hardcore nature at the limit. But if you can agree with the styling and the overall impression of the car, you will have one of the best super-sports cars that needs no modifications to be a perfect racer for the weekend and cruiser for the weekdays. You can snag a decent mileage good options example for $180,000 and with exceptional options it can go up to a little over $200,000. It is great value for a ton of car, and you will be sure to turn heads at every cars and coffee event!
